Found a site where some music i recorded lies. Dean Haakenson recorded three or four songs with me one night. Pretty good folky stuff, and this is my favorite song of the four we did. Hes got other stuff there too...

This coming Wednessday, looks like Munia will be coming out to dig-doug studios to lay down the Vocals for our demo recordings.
That is if Doug will be into that. But hes been cool so far, so i dont think it'll be a problem.

Heard from Mickie, from the Secretions, looks like they need some demo work done, so that'll be fun. Havent realy hung out with them in a while, but im lookin forward to seein them again.

I remembder recording old Milhouse demos out there
at Dans house. Recording drums through a PA head into a 4track was rad. i wish i knew what i was doing back then. I remember Dan having a huge microphone, the kind broadcasters use. It looked like a space burrito. We used it for kick drum, but im thinking now that there is no way that it was picking up signal, it had to be a phantom powered mic, and that old carvin PA head didnt supply it. strange. what was i hearing?

Found some snare drums i like, as in recorded.

1. electrogroup - on the +/- album. the third track, second song(the first track is a sample..) is my favorite song. the drum is just punchy and "there". this whole album is fuzzy and neat.

2. Drag the River - Closed. again, tight and punchy, but its got enough bottom head for those rolling drum beats to still sound a little gritty.

3. Aframes -2. Uh, this is the Chris Woodhouse snare drum sound. (it makes me shivver)

4. Drive by Truckers - i dont have my copy anymore, but i remember liking the drum sound over all.

5. ALL - live plus one. live snare could possibly be my favorite sound yet (i mean like through a PA, a big one at that...) i like the sound of drum flams alot...

recently i used a oktava mk-219 on the top head, but backed off a little and closer to the rack tom to pick that up as well. that came out pretty good. i also tried using a 57 as an over head, and it sounded pretty good too. i think the trick to over heads is to realy fly them up high. the sheer volume of the cymbals is usualy just too much. though a 57 under the hihats realy close seemed to sound fine, jsut gotta eq it right. thats a fun sound.

gotta get set up for tonight. Leon of the Frenchmen is comin over to play some bass for the postnakedrobbers band. i hear hes bringin a fuzz pedal! sweet....

Digi-cordin with Doug and Morgan.

Set up the drums in the livin room.
Put the guitar amp in the kitchen.
Play.
Record.

Yeah it was fun. For the drums we went all out and ran a total of 7 mics. kick:akgD112, Snare: sm57Top, beta56a Bottom, Tom:sm57, Ftom: sm57, Overheads: Akgc1000's. We used a Sennheiser 421 on the guitar cab.

This was a test to see what kind of sounds we could get goin inside the house and to prepare for recording the good ol frenchmen.

It came out pretty good too!. After thoughts: the kick drum wasnt there. you can hear a bass sound where the kick was, but no drum tone.
it sounds electronic maybe. i think that mic was in too far, pull it out some and get some of that nice kick drum thwump. the snare sounded good with both heads mic'd, and throw that bottom head outta phase so you can hear it! the digiboard Doug was usin(im going to start callin him dig-doug)has a feature that lets you invert the phase on any channel, which is a big help. But it still didn't sound as good as id like. i still love that top head 57 sound with the mic runnin hot. we will get there... the toms came out amazing. punchy, with a little sustain. the overheads worked out pretty well, we had to raise them up higher to get the sound we were looking for, but we had them gated, which killed out some of my hi hat clicks. have to make sure to take the gates off the overheads.

the guitar came out great. that 421 sounds good. it was all clean guitar but it came out crystal clear in my ears. we decided to add some acoustic guitar to the 4 songs we recorded and we used a c1000 for that too. im not sure if that was the right mic for it as there is a lot of string noise, but maybe its just the mix i have where its lower. i wanted to try the oktava mk-219 i have for acoutsic gutiar,
as i have done before, but the c1000 was already set up and ready to go.

Songs? Oh, morgan was in the Naked Robbers with me and after the band broke up we decided to still get together and write songs here and there. The Naked Robbers was a rock band that had some slow countryish tunes and for a while a slide guitar, which was rad to have. Ive got copies of the Naked Robbers recordings if anyone wants to email me for that. Chris Woodhouse recorded them and they came out great.

My hands are sore from drummin on saturday....
