Pets Dream.
Dreampt about PETS last night. They were playing at the Capitol Garage and there were tons of kids there to see them. I was standing there wating for them to start playing, and when they did the kids started to dance and go crazy. I couldnt hear the guitar and bass well, so i yelled to turn it up and they did midsong without missing abeat. i screamed "We Want PETS!" and the crowd started to chant. The whole time there was this kid who was setting up a bass guitar on stage, sorta interupting, but noone else noticed but me. i asked him, what are youdoing? and he ran out. some speakers got moved around too, somone put one of the mains in the corner on an amp. later on some of the mains got knocked over, but i didnt care. i just helped to plug them back in. someone plugged in the bass into one of the mains, which was funny. i later ran out to chase down that kid, i asked him if he was in the next band, but he thought he was in trouble, so he kept running.
after that i was telling Charles about how Zeke is also playing this same night, over at the Press Club, and how i had been there earlier to say hello. when he started to tell me somthing i think i woke up.
there is a cat that made friends with last night, and now she dosent want to leave. she was crying for attention through our windows waking me up several times.
Tonight we put some vocals onto the Helper Monkey recordings we did on tuesday. Should be pretty fun, and i cant wait to get a final mix on this.
Helper Monkeys
Ah twas a fun evening.
same setup as usual.
kick-Akg d112, i started it out up close to the beater head(after removing the front skin) and that sounded pretty good.
snare sm57- mic'd from the top towards the center, rather than just peeking over the rim, but noticed a crappy ass snare sound. so i had craig tune up the snare, but it still was a cardboard box type of sound. figured that we werent going to get the best snare sound, so i turned up the mic trim and compressed it a little more. squash out a little better ofa sound.
r-tomL/f-tomR oktava mk219's. ive eben using these mics as tom mics *and* cymbal mics latley. best of both worlds. but this time (vs the secretions session) i have the capsule pointed more toward the drum, and further away from the cymbals. sounded nice so we moved on.
the bass cab is another 15 and 10's combo stack unit thing. i mic'd the 10inch speaker. i listened to it and it sound ok, but when i turned the midrange all the way up i got a better tone, you could hear the strings sorta jangle a little better, so i went with that.
the guitar gave me more problems than im used to. at first it was too loud. i moved the mic back and it was still too loud. i moved it even further and it jsut was mushy. so i went in and listened to it up close and fidled with the knobs and turned the amp down by about 3 which helped immensely.
the guitar was out in the hall and the bass/drums were in the little practice spot.
tracked up 6 songs with a couple of versions for two of them and had time to lay down the guitar overdubs.
this is where i got excited. close micd the amp with the mk-219 and then a 57 about 3-4 feet back in the room. ran those left/right to two more tracks and ran with it. upon play back its got a new fullness that we lacked earlier. i like it. when he plays his leads and solos he dosent like a rythem guitar behind it, trying to sound a little more live, which is cool, so when the solos come up they cut right through. nice. check out:
this for some not so updated, but still has a nice intro of a website.
