Frenchmen, complete?
Went out to Dig-Doug studio last night for a round of vocals and some guitar overdubs. Man this is soundin good. I have yet to hear the cd they brought back, cause i went home early, but the stuff i heard did indeed sound good. im happy.
Sunday we will be recording secretions at my place. but we are going all cassette. This'll be fun though. im going to try somthing new for the drums. mic up the kit. kick(D112), snare(57), toms (not sure what mics) all through the little mixer, then a stereo condenser mic run through this old peavy mixer(for its preamps) i have and run the direct outs into one of the stereo channels on the mixer(for a total of 6 signals). not sure if it'll work, but will try saturday to test it. if it works ok, then we will go with it on sunday.
Black Dahlias (my band) will be recording with Chris Woodhouse in April. *realy* looking forward to that. hes a monster and always does a good job. i realy want to try some crazy things with the guitar. like reamping, or double micing or somthin.......we will see.
PETS -
Holy crap. PETS' song "backseat" is being played at a local dance club. radical. Last night we mixed up 3 songs even better than before. I think we nailed them. Looks like we will be recording some new songs and re-recording some other songs.
Im super glad I stopped by the loft to see Chris Woodhouse. He showed me some gain staging principles and made me rethink how ive been tackling my mixes. Now i set my 8track faders at unity, the compressor at about 0 and then the volume knobs on the channels on the mixer at unity, and turn up the trim to match. Its hard to put into words, but the mixes came out clearer this time. i wish i had done the Munia recordings last month a little better. Got a little ahead of my self i think.
Thats ok though it sounds pretty good still.
In other news The Secretions came to me for some demo work. This coming sunday we will be making some new recordings. Im excited, mainly cause of what Chris said about gain staging. I realy want to keep my signals clean and flowing. Plus its loud punk music.
As for the Audio Calendar which still hasnt seen its first release, im thinking that i might change the format a little. Quarterly release maybe? winter/spring 2004? it might make more sence, and i'd be able to put more songs onto one cd instead of 12 different releases. Yes, in fact this is the new idea. a few songs from each band with plenty of liner notes. ok.
new mic trick.
for the snare mic. for my set up with small amount of mics, and other
4 piece drumsets(one rack tom) i put the mic tween the rack tom and
snare, the sounds from the tom that gets added in is sweet. pull that
kick drum mic back, i think that outside of the kick with a blanket wouldve been better for the Frenchmen. maybe even taking my old
yellowkick drum shell and putting it in front of the drum, then
putting the mic in there, but not inside the main drum, wouldve been cool too.
PETS tonight, if they call back. recording new full songs. man another
busy week: M-pets, Tu-morgan/chris olsen band, Th-Fmen, Sat(m)-SSS,
Sun-Secretions.
