Since I have Charles' 16 channel mixing board(maybe its 20?)
I decided to try out a different approach for the drums.
kick d112, snare sm57, (I recently found my old radio shack clip on
instrument mics, which I repaired. so I used these for the toms)rack
toms RS mic(not clipped, but on a stand, pointed 'tween the two rack
toms), Ftom clipped to drum, room mics oktava mk 219s(one behind Bear
to his right, and one in front of the drums more to the left of bear).
I inserted my compressor on the kick and snare. These were all bussed
to two tracks on the 8 track. Bears drums sounded nice in my living
room and he had fun playin around on them too. we used a blanket on
the kick drum and a little cushioning inside the drum to get rid of
some boom.
The guitar was your classic marshal half stack, and the bass was an
ampeg with the 8X10 (??) cab. that huge tall thing.
so we got sounds all ready and started to track songs. we didn't come
across too many problems, and was a pretty smooth session.
Guitar overdubs were easy too. I really wanted to do guitar over dubs
in stereo, i've had good luck with that and it gives a pretty full
sound on a measly cassette 8track. Though some of the songs had
specific guitar solos, so those songs we just ran one extra guitar
track and then a specific solo track. not a problem. on a few songs
had to get John to get extra wild, which consisted of me saying "hey
john, get more wild."
We did vocals for three songs, but need to redo the first one. not
enough signal, what was I doing? huh. gotta be more careful in the
future. so 7 more songs of vocals then mixing. the vocals are mostly
on one track 'cept for when they got the gang vocals, so for that I
run the whole vocal mix to two tracks and pan it stereo. so the lead
vocal is on both tracks, and the gang vocals are run stereo, so they
are naturally behind the lead vocal in the mix.
worked from 2 till about 11. major headache and hungry and tired. but
felt good to get another recording done. 9 hours, wouldv'e been 90$, I
asked the boys, would you have spent this much on this recording? and
they said yea. so it seems that 10$ hr is a good price for what we are
getting done. right on.
