Pets came over on monday to record a reworked song, Coldhouse.
Im pretty sure its my best to date. I want to say it's cause i've learned the different tips and tricks well, and not because my dbx has been off for the past i dont know how long sessions.
but yeah, my dbx noise reduction was off. im not sure when that happened, its a little switch on the back. off all the things on my machine, its the one ive never documented. i write down compressor settings, eq settings, pedal combonations, which one comes first, microphone numbers, but which tapes did i use dbx? hmmm. dont know.
so thats a new step i need to remember to take. "DBX ON"
But the Pets track came out nice.
Bass guitar, close miked with an akg d112. i checked the cab and the middle speakers arent as loud as the top and bottom(its a 6X10), they might not even be working. i tried a second mike, an oktava mk-219 on a different speaker.
what i wanted was to blend the two together, but it wasnt soundin right.
ive been reading alot about phase recently and i suspect that iwas having some phase problem from runnin two signals, from the same source, into one track. so i pulled off the 219 and went with the d112.
we decided to run the guitar in stereo. so a 57 up close, and a mk-219 further off. ran it to two channels panned. i love that.
the drum machine went to one track.
the guitar has a part where a little solo is played, more like a lead and we decided to record that little part later as an over dub, which was a direct guitar put through this "treble booster" homemade pedal that
Mattk left over in the studio. its cool, it makes somw crazy feedback if youve got a loud amp, and it even makes crazy feedback going direct. so when after Allison plays the lead it feedsback, then she plays it again, and then more feedback. its a fun little sound.
we added vocals, doubled in spots.
Derek added some distorted vocals here and there, and later added some breathing noises, which i demanded to be run in stereo.
Shaun Slaughter is also going to remix this song.(he's already done Backseat, which i hear might be featured in an upcoming Thrasher video??! and has been in the hands of a dj who travelled to Nashville and played it at a club. it got the everyone dancing.) geez. PETS rule
